Becoming an Umpire

Starting something life changing

Becoming an umpire with the Geelong Football Umpires League (GFUL) is a great way to get involved in Australian Rules football. Whether you're new to the game or have previous experience, the GFUL provides a supportive environment where you can develop your skills and be part of a dedicated team of umpires.

Here's what you need to do to become an umpire with the GFUL:

  1. Become a member of the GFUL: The first step in becoming an umpire with the GFUL is to become a member of the GFUL. As a member, you will have access to the resources and support you need to develop your skills and be part of the GFUL community.
  2. Register with AFL Barwon: Once you have become a member of the GFUL, you will need to register with AFL Barwon through the OfficialsHQ platform. This will give you access to the training and resources you need to become a successful umpire. OfficialsHQ is also where you will receive your appointments to games.
  3. Attend training: The GFUL provides our training ground and facilities on Monday and Wednesday nights, with two sessions available each night, one at 4:30pm and the other at 5:30pm, conducted by AFL Barwon. During these sessions, you will receive hands-on training and mentorship from AFL Barwon coaches and experienced umpires, as well as the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge of the game.
  4. Start umpiring: Once you have completed your training, you will be ready to start umpiring. The GFUL provides a range of opportunities for new umpires, including junior and senior games, as well as training and development opportunities and pathway development all the way up to AFL. The GFUL has developed many senior AFL umpires over the past 40 years or more.

Whether you're looking to build your skills as an umpire, meet new friends, or simply be part of the excitement of local Aussie Rules Football, the GFUL provides a supportive and dynamic environment where you can achieve your goals.

If you're ready to start your journey as an umpire with the GFUL, we encourage you to become a member today and register with AFL Barwon through the OfficialsHQ platform. With a focus on quality, fairness, and fun, the GFUL is the perfect place to be a part of the exciting world of Australian Rules football.

If you’re interested – come down and see us, or fill in this form and someone from AFL Barwon will be in touch to discuss further and answer any questions!

If you’ve umpired before and are looking to register for 2023 – there are two steps.

  1. Pay your membership – which can be done online or in person at the GFUL rooms.
  2. Register on OfficialsHQ
